Flechtwerk: Pretty up & Time to say Goodbye

In this picture you find even four possibilities to present your regular braid in a more beautiful way: dutch or french base which looks like a longer braid, lace shirt, flower scenery and - which is my topic for today - the braid is pancaked for more volume.

This month we chose a rather open topic for Flechtwerk: Pretty up! How to pimp your maybe too simple (or even boring?!) hairstyles.

I decided to go for the threestranded braid. This is a hairstyle which can be love-hated especially for those with thinner hair. Love, because it is quick and easy and especially with longer lengths it is of simple beauty (if you ask me this starts about waistlength downwards, but just my personal preference). Hate, because a threestranded braid is a hairstyle which looks much thinner talking about volume compared to ponytails or hair down. It is for a reason that I document my hairloss recovery and regrowth with threestranded braids.

As we came up with the topic I first wanted to show you the progress from a regular tightly braided braid over a pancaked braid to a braid with extensions.
But after that wonderful weekend in the Allgäu I decided against the extensions. Because my friends kept on insisting that my hair is pretty and not (no longer) thin and that I don't need fake hair. And that felt so good! It is like finally being able to leaev the house without make-up, like fitting again in an old pair of jeans. Besides that extension are nothing you all have at home, so there wouldn't be a lot to draw from this artcile for you if I just promoted extensions...

This led to two variations of pimping up your maybe maybe not too thin threestranded braid without extra hair.

normal braid / tightly braided like Lady Amalthea / pancaked braid

First there is a technique I learned from @ladyamalthea84 last weekend. You braid super tightly here. The strands get wrapped around each other almost horizontally which creates both wideness and thickness. In the end you gently pull at each braiding stich to create a slightly heartshaped pattern.
Pro: This braid is very secure and can even be braided with some leave-in for extra shine and care. The technique is very simple and so the brad is quickly done.
Contra: This way of braiding shrinks your braidlength significantly compared to regular braiding (see photo above). Besides that, no cons here. I immediately fell in love with the technique why I decided to share it with you as soon as possible.

Braid idol and replica. Next year I want my braid to be so long, that the hairtie is where my hairends are now.

Second there is this technique you just couldn't miss over the last year: I talk about pancakeing. And I glance and blink at Nessa: I would love, love, love to make a video about that. ;) Because pulling at the sides aka pancakeing sounds so easy but in fact there are various aspects to consider for a nice result.

Do you see how tiny the strand is which is braided here? Only a small strand from my crown, not even the sides were added in (they are just tied back for the finished hairstyle). My dera Luise did this style, she has perfectionated the pancakeing technique. But I am a diligent student.
In my own words: Braid tightly and stop every second to third braiding stitch to pull at the sides of the upper stitches. For pulling, be gentle. Hold the stitch between thumb and indexfinger and press it flat gently while pulling as you want to fan out the whole stitch instead of pulling out a single strand. Then proceed with two to three new braiding stitches, hold tight with one hand and pull at the upper stitches with the other. Don't forget to pull again at the stitches you already pancaked in the step before, because they get pulled back into the braid when you continue braiding. Don't braid your whole braid to the end and start pancakeing then! I see that very often, but even though it is possible to do so I won't recommend that. The more braiding stitches your braid has, the more difficult it gets to pancake in the end. Again: don't forget to pancake the upper stitches severeal times. Don't be fooled by your feeling that you are already done with them. You are not. Braiding tightly is very important because if you braid too loosely the braid will sag and won't hold the form. Even though the result looks loosely messy, the core of the braid must be tight. If you have the impression that you can't form nice big "pancakes" out of the stitches, tighten the braid again and most of the time your problem will be solved.

Pro: With this technique you can add a hell lot of volume! Even with thin hair. And even when the braid gets worn and starts to look really messy, this is not too bad and looks like it is intended to be like that, as this is part of the undone look.
Contra: This technique needs it's time. And please, handle your hair carefully! No real literal pulling. Be gentle, When pancaking, the hairstrands get rubbed over each other, so this is not 100% hairfriendly even though it is still a technique which can be used in moderation without significant damage. Again: be gentle. The remaining hair in the tassle looks ratty due to the pulling upwards. Most braiders form a loop out of it, like I did too. When you want to make an updo out of such a braid, you don't have to worry about the tassle.

In diesem Sinne: time to say goodbye to Flechtwerk. Aber sicherlich kein Goodbye zu Kollaborationen. :)
And maybe you already guessed it from the title: this post here is the last of Flechtwerk. We had wonderful topics together but after over 3 years many things have changed, so did we and our interests. By these lines: time to say goodbye to Flechtwerk. But definitely no goddbye to collabs. :)

Grow long and prosper! :D
