Grow long hair with the Magic Seven - #1 Rest

Oder: Tu dir doch einfach mal was Gutes. Fast.
Or: Just do something good for you! It is so easy - and at the same time so complicated. Like growing hair: just don't cut. It is that easy, right? Almost.

Welcome to the first part of my little Sunday series about the magic Seven
water, food, move, rest, light, air and love.

In my intro-article I already told you in brief how you can find out for yourself which of this seven aspects are the most important for you: acutally it is all about listening and having a closer look.

Like this I quickly found out my personal number one which is my first Sundy topic now: Et is rest.

Woher weiß ich, dass ich Ruhe brauche?
"Tu dir mal die Ruhe an."
"Nimm das nicht so ernst."
"Willst du nicht mal langsam ins Bett gehen?"
"Nimm's gelassener."
Also dann.
Relaxed since April 2016.
How do I know that it is rest I need the most?
"Have a rest!" "Don't take it too serious." "Better go to bed now, hm?" "Relax a little." Suggestions of people I know who just want my best. When I listen to my inner self (or better: when I listened, as it should be written in past tense to be correct, but lets cling to present to make it more simple) I easily feel that my restless mind is up to a thousand more ideas but the rest of me of is longing for the on-off switch or at least the stand-by mode. When I look in the mirror, looking at myelf as if I were another person who asked me for advice I would say: "Girl, go get some sleep, relax. You look exhausted." So well. This nice insight is not new, but I only just decided in April to follow the advice of rest. Relaxed since April 2016. In fact it is that easy and that complicated: I just decided to do so. And since then it works.

This here is hanging right above our bed and reminds me that I am not naturally relaxed, but had to learn it. And yes, you can learn it. Just like sports, cooking are kindness

Was ist denn Ruhe überhaupt?
And as easy is not that easy I will play teacher today. What is rest? Because it is far more than only sleep or not moving. Rest is the base of regenration: for your body, your mind, your soul.

Supreme discipline is for shure - you guessed it - sleeping at night. How important it is becomes very obvious when you are sick and your body demands more sleep. Sleep is THE way of your body to deal with environmental stress, to digest it, to learn from it, to grow. The stress can be an infection, muscular stress, emotional crisis, mentally too much input - it can be anything which draws energy from you. 8 hours with a bigger block before midnight  are often recommended. I say: everybody is different. Sleep as long as you need to wake up awake. Go to sleep when your body tells you so. Depending on your job, this can cause some difficulties.
Naps. Often upgraded by calling them "powernaps". But let's cling to naps only as a powernap automatically includes, that you have to be productive afterwards. But sometimes it is really sufficiant to feel the world became a bit slower and smoother after a nap. That is sufficiant for me. I don't have to rush through my paperwork afterwards in one go. If I do, the better, but not obligatory. General recommandation is to sleep for 20 to a maximum of 40 minutes to avoid being more tired afterwards than before. I say: right. But when you really sleep longer without wakeing up without an alarm this is a very good indicator for lack of night's sleep.
Daydreaming is something wonderful if you ask me. Maybe even better than a nap. To lie down with the strong intention to powernap is very likely to fail and to stand up 30min later a little frustrated that you did not sleep and lost time for your projects. But lie down or sit down to just do nothing and let your mind wonder is really relaxing and nice. These are my intervals in which I find out best what I want to do in the remaining time of the day. Or the following week. Or my life.
Meditation.
Meditation. If you can, have a go! Might be one of the best methods to clear and refresh your mind. Probably I am to much of a beginner, because I am not able to do "real" meditation, but I am not very ambitious when it comes to this. I prefer my daydreaming. If I called that meditation my subconciousness would feel urged to succeed in emptying my mind and getting up afterwards with the biggest insight, ready to change the world. Well, just ask me again next year.

-> 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5

Less is more. Everything you perceive has to be dealt with and therefore needs energy ressources. And there is a LOT to deal with nowadays. Just ask your parents about the input they had our age and what is happening today. The longer I think about it the more magic it seems, that we are still able to walk upright. The more structured my surrounding is, the clearer are my thoughts. The less is generated around you, the less you have to re-generate (sleep, time-outs). This is a plea against information overload, all time smartphone checking, multitasking, too-much-tasking, wanting to please everybody, noise and clutter. The last aspect is definitely one of my personal favourites as it is silent and easily gets overlooked but it changes a lot in your energy level once this point is cleared. Quality time vs. quantity time. Gerade Familien sprechen viel von Quality time.
Quality time vs. quantity time. Over the last years quality time has been hyped a bit: time for yourself, for the ones you love - live the moment! The road to hell is paved with good intentions... Who is thinking in his or her hectic everyday life abut qualitiy time is most likely to build new pressure because the expectations about this quality time are high. Quality time is easily supposed to compensate the stress in the remaining time. Dare you, moment, if you don't become the best relaxing time of the day! If not why should I fiddle away precious time on you? Because it is exactly that what you need for regeneration: the feeling you experience when fiddling away letting time just be time and no schedule. Like a whole lazy day or even weekend. I often get the impression that my generation plus minus is only able to do so by Netflix and binge watching. And for many it even stays pure imagination about pajamas all day showing your to-do-list your middle finger. Especially families talk about quality time. And it really hurts me to see that this seems to be the only way for them to deal with their so limited ressoure of time as the quantity is bound in other rat races.
Auszeitmomente. Durchatmen. An die frische Luft gehen. Neuen Tee kochen gehen. Lange auf dem Klo sitzen. Einfach mal machen.
Timeout moments. Breath. Go outside to catch some fresh air. Make new tea. Sit on the toilet longer than necessary. Just do it. Smoking people manage to fit in those tiny break severeal times daily, but the unhealthy way. So can you with a healthier choice. The more impossible you feel it is, the more you need it. But keep in mind that this is only a band-aid. If it is a fight for you to get just these little breaks, something goes really wrong.
Auszeittage. Siehe Quality and Quantity Time und so.
Timeout days. See above, quality and quantity time. Weekends are not only meant for grocery shopping, cleaning your home and meeting the people you otherwise won't see. Make shure that you have regularly days only for yourself. "Only for yourself" can mean in company of someone you can stay silent with and for who's visit you don't start to hectically clean the bathroom before or appologize for the laundry in your hallway. This point becomes significantly more easy when you fixed the aspect about less is more (read above). Because then there will be just less clutter you feel the need to put away first when someone comes for a visit.
Urlaub.
Vacation. This stands for itself, doesn't it? "Come back relaxed!" is not only an empty phrase, it hits the deeper sense of vacations. Depending on your energy level this can be an active way of relaxing. Look at the word itself: Vacations. Vacant means with nothing in it.
Krankheit. Was? Im Ernst jetzt? Ja. Mind with body.
Sickness. What? For shure? Indeed. Of course you don't want that. But when you refuse to give you the rest you need, your self will find ways to force you. If your conciousness won't listen, your body will become loud. It is not mind over body. It is mind with body.

Thanks to Nickike for the photo. Not everything you think is a fail at first glace actually is a fail.

You already see it: rest is the most timeconsuming aspect of the magic seven, but funnyly also the most comfortable one. Rest is looked upon very ambivalently in these times and society. On the one hand side rest has no good lobby as it is easily mistaken for lazyness and sloth, the too much of rest, which has nothing to do with regeneration but with stagnation. But let's face it: in "my target group" and also my peer group, rest is a scarce good. Little poke in the side: Hair does not like deficiancies. That does not only count for iron, zinc and other nutrients. It counts for the magic seven also.

On the other hand side there are these relaxed people which simply (haha) don't stress themselves and which we admire like iconic figures. This is ironically reflected by the common trend in temporary lifestyle photography: everything is just a snapshot, undone, so easy and natural. Being relaxed is a status symbol in a world of running rat races. But, please, only if the relaxed persons are productive! Because otherwise they are lazy, aren't they? I will leave the point like this.

And what is your point?
